Farewell, friends!

My heart is welling up today as so many volunteers, customers and friends are wishing me goodbye.

Since I’ve worked at Mysterious Galaxy, I have had the incredible privilege to call some of the most creative, fun, and hard working people I’ve ever met my colleagues, not to mention all the customers who have become my friends. My time here is coming to an end today as I move out of San Diego and up to Northern California for a new chapter in my life. It has been an immense privilege to be a part of such a special place.

I’ve so enjoyed chatting with all of you, both on Tumblr and Twitter. Thank you for being a part of Mysterious Galaxy’s growing social media presence, thank you for your kind words about this fantastic book store, and thank you to all the booksellers and indie stores across the country for inspiring me every day.

For a time, posts will slow down a bit as the store welcomes Rob, the latest member of team MG, but stay tuned! Any suggestions or questions are welcome in our ask box, as well as on Twitter.

I’d like to thank Tim Barnes of Cheese’s Main Street Pizza in Lakeport, California, for creating the first Sandman Slim-themed pizza on the planet. It’s called the “Aloha From Hell.” I’ll let time Tim describe it in his own words: “The Aloha From Hell starts with my Diablo Rojo sauce, which is our pizza sauce blended with a mix of chili peppers, including Hobanero and seranos. It is then topped with Ham, Pepperoni, Jalapeno, Pineapple (Now you can substitute For Angry Pineapple! Pepper infused pineapple). Topped with cheese, chili powder, hot sauce and some secret ingredients from the demonium codex which makes this pizza the perfect snack while reading the Sandman Slim series.”

It’s hard for me to speak about the joys of self-publishing when I’ve never worked with a traditional publisher. But trust me when I say that stories like Penelope’s are *everywhere* and authors are now feeling safe enough to speak up about their own shitty experiences. As always, I add the caveat that the publishing industry is filled with passionate, book- and author-loving people. But it’s also filled with people who don’t have any idea how to navigate new distribution models and peer marketing.
